Unidentified Flying Objects
We strongly encourage members (and site visitors) to post images of unidentified butterflies, moths, or caterpillars here. Many members of the society have expertise in specific groups of Lepidoptera and will likely be able to help you with identification. Feel free to post images of species from anywhere. Of course, you are more likely to get a positive identification for species from the southern US. Since this page is not restricted to SLS members only, please be aware that the suggested identifications are not guaranteed to be correct. (There are many nice, helpful people on the internet, but not all are experts at Lepidoptera identification.)

Photographs should be submitted electronically in JPEG format (320 x 240 pixels if you can resize). We can also accept photo negatives and slides, though there will be a substantial delay in posting non-electronic submissions. Make sure that when you submit your image you include all appropriate locality, date and specimen size information. Members will suggest probable names for your UFO and post them here.
